Dr. James Daly of Astronomy for Change presents a public lecture on the Breakthrough Starshot Initiative that, if successful, will see the launch of humanities first interstellar mission.
Thousands of nano-class, gram-mass scale robotic craft will be launched via a high-power, phased-array microwave laser to 20% the speed of light towards the nearest star system to ours, the Alpha Centauri System consisting of Alpha Centauri A, Alpha Centauri B and Proxima Centauri, a cool red dwarf star thought to harbor an earth-mass planet.
If successful, the fruits of the mission would be unprecedented in scope and character, images, data and telemetry obtained at the directly at the star system by our first interstellar mission from earth!
